Science  Department

      At Olashore International School, science is an integral part of the curriculum and each student in the Lower School has lessons in Basic Science as a core subject. In Years 7 and 8, the different science subject disciplines are integrated and taught by a single teacher, whereas from Year 9 onwards we begin to teach Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects, each delivered by a subject specialist. At the end of Year 9, students choose their optional subjects; those with a passion for the sciences may decide to study all three science subjects, but we insist that every student takes at least one science for the next three years, leading to Year 12 WASSCE and IGCSE exams.

      Agriculture is also a subject discipline falling under the science umbrella. All students in the Lower School study agriculture, leading to BECE exams in Year 9. Agriculture has become less

      fashionable as an exam subject in recent years, but some students still see it as an appealing option and make full use of the large and thriving School Farm, which features several crop projects and an apiary. At all levels, science is very much a practical subject and our science lessons take place in modern and well-equipped laboratories, where students are given frequent opportunities to conduct practical investigations, finding their own solutions to scientific questions. Hands-on experience not only improves understanding of scientific ideas, but also develops the skills in creative thinking and problem-solving which will benefit students in their future lives, regardless of which career paths they choose to follow.

      Beyond the formal curriculum, At Olashore International School we look for opportunities to enrich the science background of our students through quizzes, competitions and projects linked to our Leadership Programme.  In 2015, the department prepared students who won the annual AISEN science quiz competition.
